April 10, 2012

Dr. Gideon Koren, Director of the Motherisk Program and Senior Scientist in Child Health Evaluative Sciences at The Hospital for Sick Children, has been awarded the 2012 Sumner Yaffe Lifetime Achievement Award in Pediatric Pharmacology.

Koren will present, "Drugs in Pregnancy: Treating the Mother – Protecting the Unborn," at the annual Yaffe Award presentation and lecture in Houston, Texas, on April 20 during the 21st annual meeting and conference of the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group.

Koren has trained paediatricians from more than 40 countries and published over 1,400 peer-reviewed papers in the areas of paediatric pharmacology and maternal–fetal toxicology. He is the first Canadian scientist to receive the Sumner Yaffe Lifetime Achievement Award, which is given in recognition of significant and sustained contributions toward the improvement of children's health through the expansion of the field of paediatric pharmacology and therapeutics.

Dr. Sumner Yaffe died in 2011 at the age of 88. He was the founder of the discipline of paediatric pharmacology in the early 1970s while working in Buffalo NY and spent most of his career at the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The Yaffe award was established 10 years ago to celebrate his legacy.
