BEAUTY PREP SCHOOL: HOW TO MAKE YOUR MAKEUP LOOK FLAWLESS IN SELFIES

Holiday party season is upon us—and with it comes an endless parade of pictures. And while filters and Facetune can help you fake flawlessness to a degree, why not learn how to primp your way to the perfect #nofilter photo with gorgeous makeup? At your selfie service, we’ve put together makeup tips that will help you look (and feel!) your best when the camera faces forward.

1) Prep your skin.
Between all the gingerbread cookies and holiday cocktails, it’s no surprise if your face is looking a little puffy. Counteract that facial bloating with a cooling, hydrating mask. Try Rodial Pink Diamond Lifting Face Mask.

2) Create your own soft focus.
A light layer of primer can serve as an ideal pre-Insta filter. Try Lise Watier Base Miracle Radiance Blurring Effect Primer.

3) Don’t cake your makeup.
Foundation is a must if you want an even skin tone, but just remember, less is best. Overdoing it on the foundation can make you look older in real life, and especially in photos.

To customize your coverage and keep it minimal where you can get away with it, try a sheer, but buildable foundation like Paul & Joe Powder Compact. It comes with face contouring colour pearls that helps mask imperfections but still lets your natural beauty shine through.

4) Spot Conceal.
Light makeup allows your natural, dewy skin to shine through, but it also puts a spotlight on any dark circles or breakouts you might have. So, what do you do? We suggest spot concealing! The key to spot concealing lay down concealer after foundation. That way you'll avoid overloading on concealer and ending up with a not-photo-friendly spackle effect. Try Stila Correct & Perfect All-in-One Colour Correcting Palette.

5) Matte the hotspots.
The natural dewiness in your skin is the very thing makeup artists try to recreate so you don’t want to squash oiliness altogether. Keep the natural shine on the highpoints of your cheekbones.

To always be photo-ready, tote the conveniently portable Shiseido Oil Control Blotting Papers and Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Cushion Foundation with you. Pre-pic, do this one-two punch: Run the powder down the center of your face, and then tap the Ultra Cushion on your cheekbones to amp up the glow.

6) Flash-proof your colour.
A strong flash tends to absorb colour. To keep skin from looking flat and lifeless, add a hit of blush on the apples of your cheeks or a wash of bronzer where the sun would naturally tan skin—on your forehead, temples, and cheekbones. Whichever product you choose, steer clear of colour that has a silica or mineral base as the flash will reflect off of those ingredients. A safe bet: Smashbox’s L.A. Lights Blush & Highlight Palette.

7) Work your angles.
As we’ve told you before, bronzer can be used to create contour and shape the face. Using a blush brush, which applies the matte bronzer more directly to your skin, sweep the formula along your hairline, over your temples, under your cheekbones and on the underside of your jawlines to give your face a more angular appearance. Try Marcelle Quad Bronzer and Quo Blush Brush.

8) Layer your highlighters.
Get the look of supernatural skin by dusting a powder highlighter on top of a cream version. Try Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight and PUR Strobe/Highlight Palette.

9) Define your eye.
If you really want to define the shape of your eyes, trace the upper inner rim of your eye with waterproof eyeliner to make your lashes look that much fuller. Try Lise Watier Waterproof Eyeliner.

10) Load up your lashes.
After you’ve applied your shadow and liner of choice, swipe on a few extra coats of mascara. A few extra layers will help open up the eye and bring focus to it.

A sure-fire way to double up the volume length and drama of your lashes is to apply on the top side of your lashes first, then apply to the underside as usual. It gives them twice the amount of formula and pigment, lending a lush look. Try Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara.

11) Bump up your brows.
A strong, neatly groomed eyebrow gives structure to your face and eyes. Just by filling them in with a pencil, powder or brow mascara can make your peepers pop. Try Smashbox Brow Tech Matte Pencil.

12) Moisten your lips.
Moist lips look more youthful so whether you use a tinted lip balm, moisturizing lipstick, or a gloss, ensure your lips are hydrated and flake free before you selfie. If you're going for a more matte lip look, dab a bit of lip balm over your lips before your pic, so they don't appear dry on camera. Try: Lancome Juicy Shaker.
