It’s a common misconception that when creating the quintessential smoky eye, black, brown and gray are the obvious (and only) options. Not so, beauties. There’s a new spin on the go-to going out eye in the form of a fiery red—and it’s a total game changer. We’ve seen on the runways (see Anna Sui, left, and at right, Jeremy Scott’s spring shows), admired it from afar and enviously spotted it on celebrities’ lids (we see you, K. Stew). Indeed, the starlet is the face of Chanel’s Le Rouge Collection, a full makeup range that more than earns its moniker.

And while merlot makes for a moody, modern update (particularly for those blessed with a flawless face), for us mere mortals it might seem intimidating to incorporate these shades into our regularly scheduled beauty routine. But fear not! This colour is a ferocious passion we can get behind.

The first thing you need to remember about wearing red eyeshadow is that not all colours are the same. Women with darker skin tones have it much easier when it comes to choosing red shadow tones because rusty reds, warm plums and saturated crimsons naturally suit darker skin tones.

For fairer skin, it’s important to choose a pigmented shadow that really pops instead of something sheer. Try Clinique All About Shadow in Black Honey and Anna Sui eye shadow in Anna Red.

The technique for a Bordeaux beauty look is pretty much the same as a traditional smoky eye, but there are a few key things to keep in mind:

First off, it’s important to start with a coloured primer to create a crease-proof base. Try Pur Eye Polish Eye Base and Top Coat in Velvet.

Don’t be afraid to mix in another colour. A black or plum shadow artfully applied in the inner or outer-corner of the eye adds depth and can ensure your shadow looks deliberate. Similarly, try a deep purple liner underneath the eyes before smudging a gorgeous garnet shadow over it. By combining the purple and red, it creates a more wearable, multi-dimensional red that doesn’t cause a sickly cast. Try Stila Got Inked Cushion eyeliner in Amethyst.

Finally, be sure to balance out the red up top by sticking with a similar toned colour on the lips and loading up on the mascara for added definition. Try Benefit They’re Real Lengthening mascara.

And that, dear friends, is how you rock the new red smoky eye—which, by the way, is the perfect way to fire up your holiday beauty look. Now you’re ready to paint the town red.
