Over 4,400 medications and other drug products are fully covered. Under OHIP+, all drugs listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Formulary are covered.
Visit ontario.ca/page/check-medication-coverage to find out if a drug is listed on the ODB Formulary or ask your Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist.
If you have been prescribed a brand name drug not covered by OHIP+, and the generic version is covered, you can switch to the generic. Alternatively, if you prefer the brand name medication, you may choose to pay the difference in cost.
If the drug you have been prescribed is not covered by OHIP+, there are a number of options to consider. Your Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist is here to help and can review the following options with you.
Speak to your Prescriber/Pharmacist – There may be an alternative medication covered by OHIP+ that is suitable for you.
Private Insurance – If you have private insurance, some drugs not covered by OHIP+ may be covered by your insurance plan.
Exceptional Access Program (EAP) – This program may enable access to some medications for which no appropriate alternative is covered by OHIP+. Your Doctor or Nurse Practitioner is required to submit a request on your behalf. If approved, the full cost of the medication will be covered. Visit ontario.ca/page/applying-exceptional-access-program for more information on EAP.
Children and youth already covered under the ODB program continue to have coverage for the same medications. OHIP+ eliminates any upfront costs such as co-payments. These changes are automatic – there is no need to contact the Ontario Public Drug Programs.
Individuals enrolled in the TDP, who are 24 years of age and under, will automatically switch to OHIP+ coverage beginning January 1, 2018. For TDP recipients, there is no change to your annual deductible as the incomes of all household members continue to be factored into deductible calculations.
The Ontario government will contact individuals prior to their 25th birthday to ensure those who still need drug coverage enroll in the TDP.
An Ontario health card is required to get OHIP+. If you need information on how to get an Ontario health card, please visit: ontario.ca/page/health-cards or contact ServiceOntario at 416-327-7567 (GTA), 1-800-664-8988 (toll-free in Ontario only) or 1-800-387-5559 (TTY).
If you have any questions about OHIP+ and your drug coverage, your Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist is here to help.
