#CHICATSHOPPERS: 6 SKINCARE TRENDS THAT WILL BE HUGE THIS YEAR

Last year marked the return of the sheet mask and the rise of anti-pollution potions, and now, 2017 has a new slew of skin savers in store. From gentler cleansers to the next buzzy ingredients, we round up the six new complexion heroes ready to change the game (and your face!).

1) CHARCOAL
“Detox” has been a major buzzword in health circles, and it’s now entering the beauty realm via charcoal-infused products. Expect to see it in masks, cleansers, and even toothpastes and deodorants. For skin, activated charcoal promises to soak up debris for a clearer complexion. If clogged pores are your top complexion woe, add the wonder ingredient to your regime (and consider snapping a selfie while you sport the inky-hued formula).

2) MICELLAR CLEANSERS
Getting your skin clean shouldn’t mean scrubbing it into submission. For a kinder way to wash, try a micellar cleanser. Though these formulas aren’t brand new, they’re beginning to flood shelves as brands release their own versions. Unlike a traditional makeup remover which removes impurities by dissolving the bonds so you can wipe it all away, micelles are tiny spheres of molecules that pull impurities into their centres to suck up dirt without the need for rubbing—or even rinsing.

Try: Reversa Cleansing Micellar Solution

3) AT-HOME PEELS
A chemical peel is a sure-fire way to get glowing skin—but that requires a trip to the derm and shelling out at least $100. Luckily, the latest crop of at-home peels offer an affordable alternative. Packed with alpha hydroxy acids like the pros use (though at lower concentrations for safer use and no down time), the formulas help slough away dead cells to reveal the brighter, fresher skin underneath. Similar to the in-office treatment, the exfoliation can leave skin sensitive to the sun, so be sure to load up the SPF afterwards (and always!).

Try: Jouviance Soft Peel Night Cream

4) COOLING GELS
In recent years, we’ve seen a surge in novel textures inspired by Korean regimes, with all manners of balms and bounce creams landing here. Now, an old fave stages a comeback: Gels. Cooling, lightweight and water-based, gels are the skincare equivalent of a tall glass of ice-water. That said, they do a ton more than refresh. The hydration-loaded formulas help plump your skin barrier to keep wrinkle- and acne-causing free radicals and pollutants out, plus, many new gels also pack antioxidants to further fight those aggressors.

Try: Clarins Hydra-Essential Cooling Gel

5) SKINCARE SPRAYS
Give your regular regime a boost by spritzing on a vitamin-filled spray before slathering on your moisturizer. Not only will a mist deliver its own benefits (think: hydration and antioxidants), but it also increases the efficacy of the products you put on after (much like how applying body lotion to damp skin post-shower locks in moisture). You might want to stow a bottle at your desk, too, for a midday pick-me-up and makeup refresh.

Try: Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray

6) RETINOLS RETURN
Retinol has long been the gold-standard ingredient for fighting wrinkles, thanks to its collagen-building properties. Unfortunately, it also has a tendency to irritate skin. Now, the vitamin A derivative is popping up all over again, thanks to new encapsulation technology that allows it to be released slowly, so there’s no sudden jolt to your skin. If your complexion still flares up from retinol, reduce your usage or switch to a lower concentration and work your way up gradually.
