THE SECRET TO GETTING GIGI AND BELLA HADID’S GLAM LIPS

You don’t have to be a runway devotee to have noticed that model sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid are having a moment. Both have made high-profile catwalk appearances, fronted coveted magazine covers, landed lucrative fashion and beauty contracts, and are now considered two of the most influential models across social media.

The super-strutters have become near-overnight sensations and bona fide It-girls, so it comes as no surprise that the sisters Hadid managed to turn more than a few heads at the L.A. Fashion Awards last month. Bella scooped up the gong for Model of the Year in what has become her signature all-black red-carpet look: sleek, understated, and minimal. While Gigi—who accepted the same award last year (because, obvi)—came out in support wearing a bustier and white see-through frock.

But it was arguably their opposing, unexpected, and yet altogether appealing beauty looks—specifically their lips—that truly stole the show. For Bella, ever the neutrals enthusiast, that took the form of pairing her razor sharp polish with a swipe of reflective pink gloss. Using Smashbox’s cultish O-Plump Intuitive lip plumper to add a sheer pop of colour, Bella’s look felt both restrained and ethereal—and offered a fresh strategy to celebrate the sunny months that even beauty minimalists can embrace.

As for big sis Gigi, makeup artist Patrick Ta kept the Maybelline spokesmodel’s signature bronzy skin and champagne eyeshadow, but put her glossy neutral lip aside for a ‘90s-inspired matte mocha shade. Ta started by lining and completely filling in Gigi’s lips with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip liner in Toast. For a shine-free finish, he topped it with Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid in Nude Thrill, creating a fresh take on brown lipstick that you can guarantee we'll be wearing by tomorrow morning.

Whether you personally gravitate towards matte and dark or light and glossy, when it comes to statement lips, the sister act slayed it–all without saying a word.
