Red alert! A deep scarlet palette is a major must-try

Learn how to play up eyes, cheeks and lips with this striking colour

An artist knows you don’t need to use every colour in the rainbow to create a masterpiece. Stunning results can also be achieved by playing with multiple tones of a single shade. This holiday, try monochromatic makeup and transform yourself into a Bordeaux beauty. In just a few steps you’ll learn how to showcase the warm hue on eyes and cheeks, accented by an ultra-chic dark lip.

1. The eyes have it

Since a dark lip can emphasize discolouration or redness, prepping your complexion is essential. Use foundation and concealer to create a uniform, radiant canvas. Moving on to the eyes, choose a waterproof black eyeliner, such as Smashbox Always On Gel Liner, and draw along the upper and lower water lines. Then, on the upper lids, trace a thin line along the base of lashes. Next, use Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour Eyeshadow in “Burgundy” to create a soft, smoky effect on eyes. This stick has a chunky tip that makes it easy to swipe the colour directly on lids, which you can blend out with a brush. Or, for more control, use a small eyeshadow brush to apply it. The creamy pigmented formula allows you time to blend and build until you’ve created the density of colour you want but will set to a transfer-proof finish.

2. Get cheeky

Now it’s time to amplify your colourful eyes and enhance your complexion with warmth. Surprise: You can achieve both goals with the NARS Limited Edition Holiday Unwrapped Orgasm Blush Duo! Using an eyeshadow brush, sweep the lighter pink blush shade onto the inner corners of the eyes and over lids. Complete eyes by applying several coats of a volumizing mascara with curling power, like the award-winning Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. On cheeks, use the brighter peach blush shade. Distribute the powder over the high points of face and along the temples with a fluffy brush, creating a soft dusting of warm colour that mimics a healthy flush.

3. Lip service

A dark Bordeaux lip shade is the final punctuation mark needed for this dramatic monochromatic makeup look. Prep lips with a lip scrub and light nourishing balm. Choose a liquid lipstick formula for the ultimate long-lasting experience that will stand up to a celebratory night of nibbling, sipping and smiling. Try Lancome L’Absolu Rouge Drama Ink in “481 Nuit Pourpre.” The semi-matte formula sets to a light-as-air feel but won’t transfer or smudge. A well-defined lip line helps this intense colour thrive. For maximum control, use a tapered lip brush dipped into the liquid lipstick to outline your mouth. Start along your cupid’s bow, moving to outer corners. Then fill in lips using the brush or liquid lipstick applicator, and your pout is ready to party!
