Influencers (in other words, bloggers and other cool-girl types with large social media followings) are at the forefront of the beauty trendscape. Here, Alyssa Lau, Kayla Seah and Alanna Durkovich tell us what their jobs are *really* like—and show us their best takes on #mybold.

How did you get your big break as an influencer?
When my boyfriend started taking my pictures so I didn’t have to shoot on my tripod anymore! It really changed how creative I could actually be.

Describe a typical day in your life.
It’s always changing, which is really nice because I get bored easily. Typically, I wake up around 9 a.m. My boyfriend and I then head to my studio/office space; we have two dogs so they like to run around while we’re working. We usually work from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and that includes working on my blog, Ordinary People, and our store, Shop New Classics. Recently, I’ve been doing lot of video projects because video is so much more dynamic than photos. If I have Instagram or blog collaborations to work on, I’ll do that, and then I go home and relax. I’m terrible with routine. I tried for a while but things happen and you need to shift things around. I think it’s more important to adapt my schedule to whatever’s happening. It makes it a lot easier and less stressful.

What was your inspiration for the bold look you created and what do you love most about it?
I'm a pretty simple person when it comes to my makeup, but that doesn't mean I don't like to go bold every now and then. For this look, I put on a bright metallic lip and kept a more natural eye. I've been really inspired lately by Maggie Cheung's look in Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love, so this look was my modernized take on makeup that Chinese women would have worn in the 1960s.

I've never tried a metallic lip before, but I'm glad I did because I can't get over the texture it gives your lips. For this look, I used the Smashbox Be Legendary Liquid Metal Lipstick in Moscow Muled for a bold lip. To complement it, I used the Pür Eye Polish in Satin for nude yet slightly shimmery eyelids.

How did you get your big break as an influencer?
There wasn’t a specific moment, but I do think going to fashion week was a huge eye-opener for me in terms of how far I’ve come. My first one was New York in 2014. Following that year, I started to do more [cities] like London and Milan. I never thought I would be sitting at Paris Fashion Week shows this early on in my career. When I’m sitting there, I always think, “This is so crazy.” Working with Chanel is something I’m so proud of.

Describe a typical day in your life.
It changes quite often. If I’m not traveling, I’m at home and it’s an office day. It usually involves being at my desk, working through emails and upcoming projects and trying to sort out all the travel because there’s so much to tackle when there are trips coming up. That’s usually my morning—administrative work. If I’m shooting, I’ll meet with my photographer for a couple of hours and we’ll shoot. And then my assistant will go through upcoming things we need to tackle. If I’m going on a trip, I usually have a focus on how I want to shoot things and what stories I want to portray when I come back, so I try to make sure I have the shots ready for that and we create a whole editorial calendar for my blog. I always work out too, so that takes me away from everything fashion-related and blog-related.

What was your inspiration for the bold look you created and what do you love most about it?
There is a lot of metal accents and metallics for fall clothing and I drew inspiration from that. I added a little more glam to the modern cat-eye look with Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow. I love how it adds something dramatic to a simple black outfit! I kept my skin fresh and simple with Pür Bare It All 4-in-1 Skin Perfecting Foundation and finished the look with a rose nude Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick.

How did you get your big break as an influencer?
I think I’ve had two big breaks in my influencer career. When I first started, my blog was strictly fashion. I would get reposted by online fashion communities (back then lookbook.nu and Chictopia were huge), and that propelled me into the “fashion blogging” world. Then, six months ago, I started focusing on beauty—creating hair tutorials and makeup looks. I got reposted quite often because of them, and it allowed me to grow 150K+ followers in a matter of months.

Describe a typical day in your life.
My typical day varies because I’m not a very scheduled person. My personality is super “go-with-the-flow.” Being a stay-at-home mother, my focus is on the kids (Noah and Autumn). I wake up and make them breakfast. If Noah has to go to preschool, we’ll get ready for that. If not, we’ll head to the park or run some errands. Maybe while Autumn naps, I’ll try to go over some emails, but usually I don’t do any work until the kids are both sleeping at night. Once the kids are asleep, I’ll create video tutorials and/or Instagram images, which usually go from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The weekends are when I get the most done because my husband is home. We’ll shoot fashion looks, and I can start working on Instagram content earlier in the day rather than 1 a.m. I’m a night owl!

What was your inspiration for the bold look you created and what do you love most about it?
My favourite time of year is the beginning of fall, when change is in the air and the leaves turn into brilliant warm tones. (Autumn is my favourite season and also my daughter’s name!) I created a monochrome look using an autumn-inspired burnt orange shade on my eyes, cheeks, and lips. This look is the right amount of edgy and pretty, and I love how easy it is to achieve.

I primed my face with Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer, then used Stila Stay All Day Foundation all over the face, concealing spots with their built-in concealer. On my cheeks, I used Stila Convertible Lip & Cheek in Gladiola and buffed it out with my foundation brush. To create that natural-looking glow, I applied Lancôme Olympia’s Wonderland Cushion Highlighter above my cheekbone, brow bone and tip of my nose. On my eyes, I primed my lids with Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Then, I used Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow in Spike all over my upper lids, blending it into the crease, also applying it on my lower lids. I created a cat-eye with Lancôme Grandiôse Liner in Noir and used Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara on my lashes. For my lips, I applied Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Wrap Party for a soft rusty red finish.
