BEAUTY PREP SCHOOL: HOW TO TAKE THE LIVED-IN LINER LOOK FROM DAY TO NIGHT

Like the perfect messy bun or beachy waves, smudgy black eyeliner is one of those undone beauty trends that’s trickier to achieve than its “I-woke-up-like-this” appeal suggests. (No, sleeping in your makeup won’t actually yield the seemingly fuss-free smudges spotted on the spring runways of Rag & Bone (left) and Carolina Herrera (at right)). As we previously mentioned before, the Lived-in liner look is so in right now! The good news? With the right tools and techniques—and just a hint of effort—you can love the lived-in liner look and rock it all hours of the day.
The secret to pulling off this smouldering look before sunset is to keep all eye makeup concentrated around your lash lines, like makeup artist Tom Pecheux did at Rag & Bone—save the more dramatic shapes for after dark. Start by rimming your top and bottom lash lines and water lines (the slivers of skin between your eyeball and lashes) with a black kohl pencil. Next, diffuse the liner along your lids using your finger, a blending brush, or, if your pencil has it, the built-in smudger. Once you’ve achieved your desired blurry outline, set it by pressing black eyeshadow over your lash lines. If you crave a bit more messiness, borrow Pecheux’s backstage tip: after slicking on mascara, use your finger to lightly smudge the formula onto your lids near your lashes’ roots. Keep the rest of your makeup light and glowy for balance.
Ready to take the look into the late hours? Let the beauty at Carolina Herrera be your inspo, where makeup artist Diane Kendal gave models a night-out look. Build on your existing liner by blending black powder a little higher on your lid and into a wider wing. To up the smudge factor, grab the fragrance-free version of Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream, a staple in almost every major makeup artists’ kits. Use just a tiny amount and dab it over your shadow to further blend and add sheen. To really make a statement, copy Kendal’s approach and finish with a hot red lip.
