There’s no question that the after-dark appeal of a steely, smoky gaze is eternal. But even the most dedicated of makeup mavens could use a shakeup. Enter: the reverse smoky eye, a cool new spin on the classic kohl eye that flips it upside down and lets your lower lashline shine!

Adding some smolder to the bottom of your eyes doesn’t just feel fresh for the season, it’s also ideal for anyone with small eyes, hooded eyelids and monolids. But above all, it’s slick, sexy and decidedly easy to pull off. Below, we share the easy four-step tutorial.

Step 1: After prepping your face and applying primer to your eyelids, use a black (or brown, for a subtler effect) pencil liner, like Lise Watier Smokey Kohl Velours, along the lower lash line and waterline.

Step 2: With a small flat brush (try the Quo Professional Shadow Smudge Brush), gently blend out your liner so there aren’t any harsh lines and extend the pigment ever so slightly past the outer and inner corners of your eyes.

Step 3: With the same brush, apply a contrasting eyeshadow over the black pencil to make your eye colour pop. For example, if your eyes are green, pick a burgundy-brown shade. If your eyes are blue, try a bronze shadow. For brown eyes, jades and violets work beautifully. You can try using SMASHBOX Photo Matte Eyes Palette which offers all these shades in one. Just be sure to focus on the edges to soften the look and help you achieve that all-important colour gradation every smoky eye needs.

Step 4: To prevent the top lid from looking like an afterthought, add a little shine with a pale shimmery shadow. Then, finish off the look with a few coats of mascara and a soft-gloss nude lipstick.
