Face moisturizer is one of those “no-brainer” beauty products: you choose your favourite formula, whether lotion or cream, and you’re done. Right?

For the most part, yes. But, when you factor in the ever-changing climate, your evolving skin needs, along with application know-how, it becomes a bit more complicated than that. Here, we share how you can choose the best facial moisturizer that works for you, and how to get the most out of it.

Know Your Type.
While most of us know whether we’re normal, oily or dry, your skin type and its needs can change with the weather, along with your age. Rule of thumb: if you’re on the oily side, choose an oil-free lotion, and if you’re normal to dry, opt for a cream formula. Some of the new gel-based cream moisturizers, meanwhile, can suit many different skin types, offering a good dose of moisture without feeling heavy.

Factor In The Weather.
Just as your skin can become oilier in the summer, it can experience the opposite effect in winter, becoming too dry and parched. Moisturizer benefits like oils, skin nourishment and hydration become all too important to go without during winter! In very cold climates or for outdoor activities such as skiing, nourishing creams are the best options for locking in water and oil in the chilly, dry climate. Oily skin types, on the other hand, can transition from lotions to oil-free cream formulas.

Lock It In.
A moisturizer is only as good as how well you apply it, so be sure to smooth on an even layer across your face. Exfoliate weekly with either a manual or chemical exfoliator, or use a daily cleansing brush to whisk away dead skin cells to help your moisturizer penetrate better. Another pro tip: apply your moisturizer to moist skin, whether still damp from cleansing or after applying a toner.
