Some mornings we wake up wondering if we somehow slept through a decade—with skin feeling a little duller, and our fine lines not quite so fine. On those days, we turn to these five easy makeup tricks to re-energize in a flash.

1. Embrace colour theory.
A sallow complexion can add years to your appearance. Commit to regular hydration to help kick the yellow-ish tones over time, but in the short term, layer a lavender colour-corrector under your base makeup to cancel out the off hue.

2. Switch to brown.
As we age, jet-black eyeliner and mascara—onetime staples—can start to veer into harsh territory. For a softer look, switch to subtler, earthy hues to define your lash line without the intensity.

3. Start strobing.
Young skin naturally reflects light, but as our cell turnover slows, things can start looking dull. Give a tired complexion a boost with liquid highlighter. Try mixing a small amount into your day cream and applying all over, or dab the formula directly onto the high planes of your face after foundation.

4. Go creamy.
Powders tend to dry skin out (hence why they’re the go-to for preventing shine), but a bit of sheen contributes to a healthy, youthful glow. Instead, pick cream eyeshadow and blush formulas to keep your makeup looking fresh.

5. Lighten your lip look.
If you’re after a lovely pout, forget about the dark, matte lipstick trend. Your best bet? Soft rosy hues, which play up your complexion’s natural flush, in a slightly glossy finish to bounce light away from any fine lines.
