READY. SET. GLOW: HOW TO TAKE YOUR HIGHLIGHTER TO A BOLD NEW LEVEL
Back in the ’70s, blush draping was the beauty signature of iconic celebrities such as Jerry Hall, Debbie Harry and Grace Jones. Makeup artists swept sharp fuchsia blush along cheek blades and then up to the temples for a graphic, disco effect. Today that makeup artist ‘draping’ effect is back with sheer, holographic highlighter standing in for heavy colour, with celebrities like Rihanna and Demi Lovato leading the pack with wearing this bold beauty trend. The technique made headlines at Valentino’s Spring 2018 runway where makeup artist Pat McGrath blended pale pink shimmer in a “C” shape motion on the models’ faces, harmonizing with paired back, peachy-nude lips. Both retro and futuristic at the same time–call it a look for cosmic chameleons.
Step 1: Start by creating a bit of definition around your eyes using a black eyeliner pencil.
Try: Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner
Step 2: Next, outline your eyes with a soft, cream-to-powder eyeshadow in a neutral shade, blending with a fluffy eyeshadow brush.
Try: Clarins Ombre Iridescente in Silver Plum
Step 3: Apply a natural-matte foundation using a sponge or foundation brush, starting in the centre of your face and blending outwards. (A 24-hour formula means both your base and your glowing highlighter look will last all day, even in humid weather.) Cover up any dark circles and blemishes with concealer.

Step 4: Using a blush brush, apply a barely-there coloured cream blush to the centre of your cheeks and blend outwards.
Try: Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cream Blush
Step 5: Coat top and bottom lashes with a volumizing mascara, making sure to start right at the base of the lash line and dragging the wand upwards. (A slimmer brush will allow you to get into those tiny crevices.)
Try: Benefit Cosmetics BADgal BANG! Volumizing Mascara
Step 6: Add texture and volume to your eyebrows using a fibre-enriched brow product, brushing against and then with the direction of the hairs to set.

Step 7: After applying blush to the apples of your cheeks, use a blush brush to apply an iridescent pink highlighter along the high points of your cheekbones, carrying the colour up to the temples in a ‘C’ shape. Finish with touches along your brow bones and even down the centre of your nose.

Step 8: Complete the holographic look with a rosy-beige lip gloss and build up the layers depending on how glassy you want to go.
