TREND TAKEOUT: GLOSSY MAKEUP THREE WAYS
If you’ve ever admired someone who has sported super dewy skin, vinyl-like lips or the ever-alluring glossy eye IRL and managed to actually pull it off, trust us: You are not alone. As we discussed before, all gloss everything is beauty’s current motto (from the eyes to the lips) and yet, creating a slick, wet-look texture isn’t as simple as mashing a sticky salve onto your complexion and calling it a day.
Thankfully, a few of our favourite beauty bloggers, La Belle Sirene’s Courtney Connolly, Stealing Beauty’s Alexa Lowe, and Beaux Mondes’ Stephanie Trendocher, broke it down step-by-step for us about how they’ve mastered the art of gloss. Even if you don’t have mad makeup skills, these three looks are fairly easy to do once you secure all the appropriate products.
“Start with priming the eyes for a clean canvas-—apply a couple swipes of the Maybelline Master Prime Long Lasting Eye Shadow Base, blend with your finger and then set with a powder like the NYX Studio Finishing Powder.
Next, add some definition by applying a neutral brown shadow into the crease of the eye. I used an eye shadow with a fluffy brush focusing on the outer corner and dragging the colour into the crease towards the inner corner.
When choosing your lid shade you want to pick one shade to cover the entire lid to help create a seamless mirror-like effect. Go for something simple but glamorous like a copper or gold with a metallic or soft shimmer finish. I chose the NYX Prismatic Shadow in Liquid Gold. Using a flat brush, apply the shadow to the entire lid going all the way up to the crease and then finish with a fluffy brush to lightly buff out the edges. Make sure to drag a bit of the shadow along the lower lash line in the outer corner to create a smoked out effect.
Add a lighter champagne or pearl shade into the inner corner & onto the brow bone to highlight and add dimension. I used the NYX Prismatic Shadow in the Girl Talk making sure to focus the most product on the brow or corner blending it out onto the lid.
Apply a bit of brown eyeliner, like Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil in Sharp Brown, onto the lash line in the outer corner, stopping about halfway across the lid and use a brush to softly smudge the liner. Finish off the look with plenty of mascara on both the top and bottom lashes. I used the new Maybelline Colossal Big Shot Mascara in Blackest Black.
Now for the most important step of the entire look. To achieve that glossy effect, take a tiny bit of the Maybelline Lip Studio Shine Shot Topcoat on your finger and dab it onto the lid covering the entire space. Add as much or as little as you want until you achieve that glass-like shine.”—Courtney Connolly (@labellesirene_)
“It can be tricky to get tidy glossy bold lips! My trick involves using lip liners because they offer much more precise application compared to lipstick straight out of the tube or lip gloss on its own.
I start with L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lip Liner Red/Wine 307 to line my lips and fill in the outer corners. Next, I used Annabelle Lipliner in Burgundy #245 to fill in the remaining portion of my lips and ensure that the shades are well blended. Note that using a lighter lip liner in the center of the lips helps create more dimension.
The last step is to dab Maybelline LipStudio Shine Shot Lip Topcoat #02 to the center of the lips with a finger. Only apply gloss to the center of the lips, otherwise you will experience feathering at the edges of the lips.
Have fun with it! To alter the look, experiment with different lip liner shades or use a colourful gloss. I also like to use the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream instead of lip gloss sometimes.”—Alexa Lowe (@stealingb)
“Nothing glows quite like healthy skin. Gosh Overnight Primer Oil Essence is packed with nourishing oils and antioxidants, so you can wake up with a moisturised, dewy complexion. It’s the perfect way to prep your skin for the day.
Next, I use Physicians Formula Organic Wear Beauty Balm to further hydrate and smooth. While you can go the traditional highlighter route, I just pat a couple drops of Gosh Lumi Drops in Peach above my cheekbones for that dewy glow. And just like that, your skin will look like it's lit from within.”—Stephanie Trendocher (@beauxmondes)
