Let’s breakdown what are the best nutrition strategies to ensure that both your and your body’s needs are covered before and after you get your vaccine shot.

  1. Make sure you are well energized.
    While there is no direct evidence of food having an impact on the vaccine's effectiveness, eating a balanced meal before your appointment could help prevent you from fainting, especially if you are feeling nervous before your shot. Make sure to include some unrefined carbohydrates, greens, and protein in your meal for a perfect pick-me-up before the appointment.

    Are you planning to get your shot in the morning? Make sure to get a good night’s sleep to let your immune system rest and reach its full potential in the morning. Here’s a list of foods that can help you sleep.
  2. Avoid drinking alcohol.
    There’s currently no evidence showing that drinking alcohol will negatively impact COVID-19 vaccination efficacy. However, alcohol can negatively impact your immune system and dehydrate you, so doctors recommend avoiding alcohol the day before and after the shot.
  3. Plan your meals after the vaccination.
    Fatigue is one of the common vaccination side effects, so you might want to plan your meals in case you will experience low energy levels. You can get some staples such as grains, pulses, canned or frozen vegetables as well as some fresh produce, or pick up one of the PC Chef meal kits for an easy and nourishing meal.
  4. Have some comforting and anti-nausea foods on hand.
    Less than half of those who received their shot report feeling nauseated, but keeping some foods that help to feel less nauseated might help in case it kicks in. Here are some ideas that can help:
    • Chicken broth
    • Ginger tea or fresh ginger
    • Applesauce
    • Plain crackers or toast

Bottom line
Nutrition might not have a direct impact on the efficiency of the covid vaccine but getting enough sleep as well as having balanced meals and staying hydrated will certainly make you feel better!
