Does nutrition play a role in mental health?

There’s definitely a relationship between the food choices we make and our mood. Our brain demands a constant supply of energy. In fact, it accounts for approximately 20% of our daily caloric needs. The proper balance of nutrients can help to build essential brain chemicals or neurotransmitters that regulate mood and prevent damage to the brain. Therefore, getting the right type and amounts of nutrients support our mental health by preventing loss of memory, slower processing, and disrupting thinking. Some key nutrients such as protein, omega-3 fats, vitamin d, B vitamins and fibre help our brain function at its best. These nutrients produce energy, decrease inflammation, create neurotransmitters and build brain cell membranes. To meet your requirements, try incorporating a variety of whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, leafy vegetables, fatty fish and seafood, eggs, and poultry to your diet.

Whether you have questions about your prescription medications, over-the-counter products, immunizations, or other health concerns, our pharmacists and registered dietitians are here to help.
