Get The Look - Matte & Metallic

GET THE LOOK: MATTE & METALLIC

When Hailey Baldwin stepped onto the Dolce&Gabbana fall runway, we bowed down, and it had nothing to do with the crown she was wearing. She was serving glowing skin, perfectly groomed eyebrows, feline flicks full-tilt skyward and a subdued, caramel pout. Turns out, that ethereal vision was just the beginning of things to come. Elsewhere at shows like Jason Wu and Prada, makeup artists kitted out classic cat-eyes by playing with colour, shape and even sparkly embellishments, contrasting metallic moments with matte. Here, we’ve mapped out how to stack rose gold metallic liner over traditional black, and the subtle matte finishes, to create a look that balances all the glam.

STEP 1: MAKE IT MATTE
To get ready for metallic flourishes on eyes, start with a shine-free foundation. Mattifying powders in most matte liquid formulas absorb oil, minimizing the appearance of pores to achieve a flawless, velvety base.

STEP 2: GO FOR THE GLOW
Now it’s time to add a little sheen to avoid having your complexion looking too flat. A stick highlighter glides on easily, and often has in it vitamins and hydrating ingredients that help further boost your skin’s natural glow. Apply to your cheekbones and along the eyebrow arches, and blend in with your fingers.

STEP 3: PREP YOUR LIDS
Before laying on the double strokes of liner, create a warm, neutral base over your eyelids using a rosy nude tone. Choose a soft satin finish, which will work to bring out both metallic rose gold and high shine, black liquid liner.

STEP 4: FINE LINING
To create your duo-tone liquid eyeliner look, start with the black liner along your lash line, carrying the stroke upward in the direction of the outer tip of your eyebrow. Press gently if you prefer a thin line, and increase the pressure if you’d like it to appear wider.

STEP 5: THE LAST DRAW
Next, stack the rose gold liquid eyeliner just above so the two lines are touching but not layered overtop. You really want to be able to see that glimmer of metallic!

STEP 6: GRAB YOUR COAT
Create a full lash fringe by coating eyelashes with lengthening and volumizing mascara, combing upward for a feathery effect.

STEP 7: BROW DOWN
We’ve all fallen for the bold, microbladed eyebrow look over the past few years, but not so much for its posh price tag. A new, multi-prong tip in at-home liquid applicators allows for hair-thin strokes to fill and define brows with similar drama.

STEP 8: MATTE OUT
With a flicker of metallic on the eyes, choose a more muted finish for lips. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t go all out with rich colour! Nudes, browns or deep burgundies in a matte velvety finish all flow well with the jewelry-like effect of rose gold eyeliner.
