If there’s one fall makeup trend not to miss right now, it’s graphic eye makeup. Standout stares are heating up the runways and red carpets alike. But achieving a killer eye look doesn’t mean choosing a one-size-fits-all approach; it’s more about finding a flattering technique that’s unique to your own individual eye shape.

Unlike face shapes, eyes are much more specific; although, chances are you’ve never given yours a lot of thought. Here’s why you should: The right makeup technique can make or break your look! Think of it as tailoring for your face. You want the best fit as possible.

Since the graphic eye trend really runs the gamut, it can be a bit confusing if you’re a newbie; so we’ve rounded up specific looks for the most common eye shapes.

THE MONOLID EYE

If you don’t have a defined crease on your lids, create your own definition with the help of metallic eyeshadow. We love the look of a two-toned effect that uses a light shade on the inside and a darker one along the lashline and outer eye corner.

THE ROUND EYE

These eyes are among the few that can handle a prominent lower lash line. Since the round shape tends to emphasize the whites of the eyes, try a graphic shadow shape and a bold liner look outlining the entire perimeter, and don’t forget the inner eye rims.

THE HOODED EYE

Have little lid space to work with? Enter the sultry eye—sans shadow. Apply liner (shadow reflects too much light) to the mobile part of the lid and smudge it out using your fingers for a lived-in, smokey effect.

THE ALMOND EYE

Ever heard of doe eyes? This revered eye shape is the most versatile when it comes to eye makeup. For a graphic twist, go bold with a thicker cat-eye drawn on with vibrant-hued eyeliner.

THE DOWNTURNED EYE

Pull off the graphic look the right way by drawing the eyes up. Apply a dark liner along your upper lash line only, extending it out and up at the outer corners.
