MS treatment: Start early and stick with it

To get the most from your multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment, there are 5 important facts to know.

Fact #1: Early treatment may help slow the progression of MS.

Even before a person has any symptoms, MS may already be permanently damaging the brain and spinal cord. Starting MS treatment early may help slow the progression of MS symptoms and reduce how often relapses happen, and how bad they get, when they do. A study found that, during the first 2 years of the disease, there is a "window of opportunity" where treatment has the most impact on slowing down disability caused by MS progression.

Talk to your neurologist about your MS treatment options.

Fact #2: MS treatment may be important even when you're not having relapses.

It may be hard to stay on treatment when you aren't having any MS symptoms. But MS may still be causing damage without causing symptoms. This means that you may need to continue your treatment as prescribed, even when you're not having any noticeable symptoms.

If you have questions or concerns about your treatment, your neurologist can help. Use the Treatment Check-Up tool to see if you should speak to your neurologist about your treatment.
