Prevention of gum and tooth problems

For your mouth as for your car, it makes good sense to do some maintenance on a regular basis rather than let a problem grow out of hand from neglect. Follow the Canadian Dental Association's 5 Steps to a Healthy Mouth to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Five-Point Prevention Plan

  1. Brush your tongue and teeth twice a day.
Pick your soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste of choice and be sure to floss daily.
  2. Stay away from tobacco products.
Whether it's smoked or smokeless, tobacco products can negatively impact the appearance and health of your oral cavity. Quitting smoking and curbing your use of tobacco products can not only improve your oral health but also reduce your risk of developing other health conditions.
  3. Eat, drink, but be wary.
Eat a well-balanced diet! Avoid foods and beverages that are packed with sugar, sodium, carbohydrates or saturated fats. And please limit your alcohol intake. Make water your drink of choice and choose mouth-healthy snacks like cheese, nuts, vegetables and non-acidic fruits instead.
  4. Check your gums.
Check regularly for these signs of gum disease, the leading cause of adult tooth loss: red, puffy or tender gums; gums that bleed even slightly when you brush or floss; persistent bad breath. It's important to also watch out for any signs of oral cancer like bleeding or open sores that don't heal, white or red patches in the mouth, numbness or tingling, or small lumps and thickening within your mouth. See your dentist if any occur.
  5. Don't wait until it hurts.
See your dentist for preventive checkups and professional cleanings. Regular visits are the best way to prevent trouble and unnecessary expense.
