What is type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, or more commonly referred to as insulin dependent disease. This is where the body can’t produce enough insulin and we also can’t regulate blood sugar control. The problem with it is our body is actually attacking our pancreas causing us not to be able to produce the insulin. This type of diabetes is most common in childhood or adolescence and for those people with type 1 diabetes, they will need to inject insulin or use an insulin pump on a daily basis. Type 2 diabetes are those people that can’t properly use the insulin that’s produced by the pancreas, or in some cases they just don’t produce enough insulin. This one is most commonly associated with adulthood and it can be managed with healthy eating and regular exercise but there are those instances where many patients will still be required to use medication or in some cases insulin therapy.
