What is a minor condition and how do I know if I have one?
A minor health condition is a less serious condition that can generally be self-diagnosed and self-managed. It may even improve on its own over time. However, despite the name “minor”, minor health conditions can have a major impact on your wellbeing and may sometimes require prescription medication. Examples of minor health conditions include skin rashes, allergies and acne, among others. If you think you have a minor health condition, talk to your Pharmacist.
How do Pharmacists assess and prescribe for minor health conditions?
If appropriate, your Pharmacist will discuss your condition with you over the phone, in a consultation room or other private area. He or she will ask you questions about our symptoms and how long you have had them, to determine if you have a minor health condition. You will also be asked about your other medical conditions, the medications you take and if you have any allergies. The Pharmacist will either make a treatment recommendation, which may include writing you a prescription, or if the Pharmacist determines your condition is more serious, you may be referred to your Doctor.
What should I expect from this service?
- A treatment plan – your Pharmacist will develop a plan just for you and may provide you with a prescription, based on his or her assessment.
- A follow-up – the Pharmacist will check in to see how you’re doing and ensure the medication is working.
- Up-to-date medical records – the Pharmacist will inform your regular Doctor of any prescriptions that he or she writes for you.
Will the Pharmacist prescribe medications for me? Pharmacists are trained to assess your health condition and help provide the most appropriate treatment option for you. Your Pharmacist may start by recommending over-the-counter medications or products, however, minor health conditions may however require stronger medications that are only available with a prescription. If appropriate, your Pharmacist can write you a prescription for your minor health condition.
Will my Doctor know that I came to see the Pharmacist? Pharmacists work very closely with Doctors and share relevant information to help ensure you receive the best care, your Pharmacist will communicate with your Doctor to ensure your medical records are up-to-date.
Is there a cost to this service? Will my private insurance plan cover the fee? Professional fees apply to assess your condition. Many private insurance plans offer health care spending accounts that may cover this service, so be sure to keep your official receipt as you may be able to submit it to your insurance provider.
Do I have to book an appointment to see the Pharmacist? No, you do not require an appointment. Most locations offer this service on a walk-in basis. Simply speak to a member of your Pharmacy Team for more information.
