The Shoebox Project

The Shoebox Project for Shelters, supported by Dream, collects and distributes gifts in the form of Shoeboxes to women who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in communities across Canada and the US. Each Shoebox is filled with items valued at $50 that can enhance self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation for women in crisis.

Why it Matters
For women who have been displaced from their homes and estranged from their families, the holidays can be a particularly challenging time. Often, women feel disconnected from society, invisible and alone. A Shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued member of her community. For those giving gifts, The Shoebox Project is an opportunity to give back to someone in your community. It’s a small gesture of kindness that has an immediate and positive impact on the woman who receives it. The act of creating Shoeboxes tends to bring people together and works to give a human face to the issues of poverty and homelessness.

The Impact of a Shoebox
When a woman lacks access to self-care, it can have a significant and debilitating impact on her self-worth. It is the goal of SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. and The Shoebox Project to help reduce these pressures by providing women who are homeless or at-risk with some basic personal items like soap, shampoo and socks as well as items they are unlikely to buy for themselves. These seemingly small things can help a woman feel beautiful and confident in a time of great personal turmoil. Most importantly, a Shoebox is a powerful reminder that she is valuable and not alone; someone in the community is thinking of her. We can give her warmth, comfort, and confidence, by making a Shoebox gift just for her.
